I am so glad you are here.
Last time, we sat together with Sayyida Nafisa --- a woman who carried grief and grace in equal measure, and who became, without ever intending it, a lighthouse for an entire city's longing. I have been thinking about her ever since. About what it costs to hold that much light.
Today I want to tell you a different kind of story. Quieter in some ways. Louder in others.
It is a story I have carried for a long time, and I will be honest with you --- it is not an easy one for me. There are threads in the great tapestry that I trace with wonder. There are others I trace with something closer to grief. This one I trace with both hands, and I do not always trust my voice when I speak of it.
But it needs to be told. These women need to be seen.
So. Stay close. I am going to take you to San Francisco. To a city on fire. And to a girl whose name, for the first eight years of her life, no one thought worth writing down.
It is before dawn on April 18, 1906, and San Francisco is burning.
The earthquake came first --- a little after five in the morning, forty-five seconds that unmade the city. But it is the fire that will consume it. Gas lines broken, water mains fractured, the flames moving block by block through the wooden hills without anything to stop them. By the time the sun rises, the smoke is so thick it turns the light the color of copper.
I am standing in the street watching it. I have watched cities burn before. More than I care to count. And I will tell you something --- fire does not discriminate. Fire is one of my aunt Eris's favorite tools. She is The Greek goddess of discord and strife. She and I have been pulling in opposite directions since the beginning of time. She doesn't wield the fire herself. She simply arranges the conditions and steps back.
There is a woman, moving against the flow of everyone else. While the city pours itself toward the bay, toward the parks, toward anything that isn't burning --- this woman is moving toward the fire. Her name is Donaldina Cameron, and she is heading back toward Chinatown.
Not for silver. Not for the furniture. Not even for the girls themselves, who are already safe, already evacuated to the hills.
She is going back for a book. A book filled with legal records.
I want you to understand what those records were. They were not merely files. They were not administrative paperwork in the ordinary sense. They were the legal proof that the women and girls of the Presbyterian Mission Home existed --- as people, not property. Guardianship documents. Court records. The accumulated paperwork of years of quiet, ferocious work to give these women something the law had spent decades denying them.
A name. A legal name. One that belonged to them and not to the men who had bought them.
Think about that for a moment. These women had arrived in America on false papers --- paper daughters, they were called, smuggled in under forged documents that said they belonged to families they had never met, destined for men who had purchased them before they ever set foot on the dock. Their legal existence in this country was a fiction written by their traffickers.
And now their freedom rested on a different set of papers. Papers that said: this person is real. This person is known. This person cannot be taken.
Cameron retrieved the logbook. She carried it back through the smoke and the heat and the chaos of a city coming apart.
The records survived.
Somewhere in those pages --- I knew, because I had watched her name written down twelve years before, on a January afternoon when someone finally thought to ask --- was a girl named Tien.
And I found myself wondering, standing in that copper-colored dawn, how she had gotten there. How any of them had gotten there. What world had to be built, what cruelties had to be normalized, what laws had to be written and what fathers had to make what terrible calculations, for a child's freedom to depend on a piece of paper surviving a fire.
Let me tell you about that world.
To understand Tien, you have to understand the world that made her disposable.
Not the world of villains. That is the easy story, and it is not the true one. The true one is harder, and sadder, and I think more important.
Start in Zhejiang province, in the middle of the nineteenth century. China is coming apart at the seams. The Taiping Rebellion has killed somewhere between twenty and thirty million people --- more dead than the entire population of California today, swallowed by a civil war that lasted fourteen years and left whole provinces hollowed out. Tien's parents survived it. That alone tells you something about them. They were not weak people. They were not careless people. They had held on through something most of us cannot imagine.
And when the killing was finally over, and they had rebuilt enough of a life to breathe again, they did what families of their station did. They bound their daughters' feet.
I want you to sit with that for a moment before you judge it. Foot binding was not, in that world, an act of cruelty. It was an act of aspiration. A girl with bound feet was a girl whose family had enough standing that she did not need to work in the fields. It was a signal to the world --- and to potential husbands --- that she came from somewhere. That she was worth something. That she was marriageable.
It was love, expressed through a framework that had been constructed over centuries to keep women small. Literally small. The framework was the problem. The love was real.
I have seen this pattern more times than I can count. Eris does her best work not through monsters but through systems. Through assumptions so old and so thoroughly normalized that even the people inside them cannot see the bars.
Tien's father was not a monster. He was a man with gambling debts and a daughter he had raised within a system that had always told him she was, at the end of the day, a resource. When the debts came due, he made the calculation that system had prepared him to make. He locked her in a cabin on a boat bound for Shanghai without explanation. She was perhaps eight years old.
In Shanghai, a woman helped her unwrap the bindings from her feet. I remember watching that. The slow, painful unspooling of cloth. The girl looking down at her own feet as if seeing them for the first time.
She boarded a steamer to San Francisco. A paper daughter, almost certainly --- traveling under documents that said she belonged to a family she had never met, entering a country that had passed a law specifically designed to keep her out.
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. I was there when it passed. I have watched a great many laws in my time, and I will tell you --- the ones that produce the opposite of their stated intention are among the most dangerous instruments human beings have ever devised. The Exclusion Act was meant to stop the trafficking of Chinese women. Instead it guaranteed it. By barring Chinese women from entry except as wives of men already here, it handed the traffickers exactly what they needed: a system of false papers, a population of invisible women, and a legal architecture that made them nearly impossible to protect.
The tongs were not an aberration of Chinese culture. I want to be clear about that. They were a community's adaptation to the specific brutality of American exclusion --- criminal organizations, yes, but ones that operated in the open, that ran gambling and commerce and yes, the trade in women, with the full knowledge and financial cooperation of San Francisco's city government. Abe Ruef and Eugene Schmitz ran city hall. The tongs paid them. The women paid for the arrangement with their lives.
When Tien arrived in San Francisco, she was put to work in a brothel called the Peking. When that owner fell into debt, she was sold to a gambling den on Jackson Street. She was small enough that they made her carry a baby on her back while she did the household chores. She was covered in burns and cuts and bruises.
She was perhaps ten years old.
And she was, by every measure the world around her recognized, nobody.
That is the world I need you to hold in your mind. Not a world of exceptional evil. A world of ordinary, institutionalized, legally protected, economically efficient disposability. A world that had never been asked to see these women as anything other than what they were priced at.
A neighbor finally reported her plight in January of 1894. Workers from the Mission Home came with two police officers. They found her and carried her out.
And someone --- for the first time in her life that anyone recorded --- wrote down her name.
When they carried Tien out of that gambling den on Jackson Street, they brought her to 920 Sacramento Street. The Presbyterian Mission Home.
I want to be honest with you about this place, because it deserves honesty.
It was not a perfect sanctuary. The women and girls who came through its doors were not allowed to leave without an escort. They were expected to convert to Christianity. They were remade, to some degree, in the image of what their rescuers believed a saved woman should look like. I watched that happen, and I had feelings about it. I still do.
And yet.
What the Mission Home was doing, underneath all of that, was something I recognized. Something I had rarely seen done so deliberately, so persistently, in all my long years of watching. They were insisting --- legally, practically, document by document --- that these women were persons. Not metaphorically. Not spiritually in some vague and uncommitted sense. Legally. Concretely. In language a court would recognize.
To name someone is an act of profound spiritual consequence. I have always believed this. To write a name down, to attach it to a body, to say this person exists and is known and cannot simply be made to disappear --- that is not paperwork. That is a declaration. It is the oldest form of resistance against the forces that would reduce a human soul to a transaction.
Tien's burns were treated. She was given food. She learned to play --- a makeshift jump rope, a swing in the basement. She described her childhood at the home as carefree, and when I heard that word I held it very carefully, because I knew what it had cost. Carefree. For a child who had been locked in a cabin and sold and burned. That single word told me everything about what she had been rescued from.
She learned to read. First in Chinese, then in English. I watched her do it --- watched the moment when the marks on the page stopped being marks and started being meaning. I never tire of that moment. In all the centuries I have watched human beings, that particular threshold --- the moment a mind unlocks language --- still moves me every single time.
Let me take a minute to tell you about Donaldina Cameron .She was a Scottish woman from a sheep ranch in the San Gabriel Valley, with no particular qualifications for what she would spend her life doing. She was the director of the Mission that rescued Tien. Tien rebelled against her at first. Naturally. Tien had earned her suspicion of everyone. But something shifted between them over time --- slowly, imperfectly, in the way that real relationships always shift. Tien began to call her Lo Mo. Old Mother. Cameron called her Blessed Tien.
I watched that friendship form and I will tell you --- it was real. Complicated, yes. Unequal in ways neither of them could fully see, perhaps. But real.
When Cameron's most trusted aide died of tuberculosis, Tien stepped forward. She was not asked. She offered. Five dollars a month to do the work that needed doing. To translate. To accompany Cameron on rescues. To stand in courtrooms and speak for women who had no voice the law recognized.
And here is the thing that stays with me most about that moment. Tien had, by then, received a scholarship to study at an elite boarding school in Philadelphia. She went to Toronto Bible College. She had an education, a credential, a pathway out of Sacramento Street and into a different kind of life entirely.
She chose January 17 as her birthday. The day of her rescue, not the day of her birth, because she did not know the day of her birth and perhaps because she understood something that took me a long time to appreciate --- that the day we begin is not always the day we arrive. That sometimes we are made, rather than born, into the people we are going to become.
She came back to San Francisco in June of 1911. She came back to the home. To the work. To the women still being carried out of the dark.
I have asked myself many times why. I think I know the answer. I think she understood that her scars were not the worst thing that had happened to her. They were the most useful.
There is something I have noticed, in all my long centuries of watching human beings find their way toward one another across the chasms of difference and fear and misunderstanding. The most persuasive thing a person can offer is not an argument. It is not even compassion, as powerful as compassion is.
It is proof.
When Donaldina Cameron and her workers went into the brothels and the gambling dens and the tenement rooms of Chinatown, they were met with terror. Not gratitude. Terror. Because the women inside those rooms had been told --- carefully, repeatedly, by the men who owned them --- that the white devils would sell them to worse places. That the mission workers were not rescuers but rivals. That there was no world outside the one they were in that had any use for them.
Cameron could not reach through that fear. She did not have the language, literally or otherwise. She was, however genuinely she meant it, a white woman from a sheep ranch, and she carried that with her into every room she entered.
But Tien.
Tien would push up her sleeve. She would show them the scars. She would say, without needing many words: I was here. I was where you are. I know what this place feels like from the inside. And I am standing in front of you, which means there is somewhere else to stand.
I have seen this before. I have seen it across centuries and continents --- the particular authority that belongs only to the one who has been through the fire. It cannot be borrowed or conferred or learned in a school in Philadelphia, however fine that school might be. It lives in the body. It speaks through the evidence the body carries.
She spoke to them in Cantonese. She advocated for them in court, translating not just the words but the reality of their lives into a language the legal system was barely equipped to hear. She stood beside them in rooms where the men who had owned them sat across tables and argued, with lawyers and paperwork and the full confidence of the corrupt, that these women were theirs.
And she was called a traitor for it.
I want you to sit with that for a moment, because it matters. The threatening letters. The taunts. Her own community --- or a portion of it, the portion most invested in the machinery she was dismantling --- calling her a collaborator, a race traitor, a woman who had chosen white devils over her own people. That is a particular kind of wound. It cuts differently than the wounds strangers inflict. It is designed to reach the place where your sense of belonging lives.
She kept going.
Between two and three thousand women passed through the Mission Home from its opening in 1874 through the mid-1930s. Two to three thousand names written into those ledgers that Cameron ran back through the burning city to save. Two to three thousand legal identities constructed, one court appearance at a time, against a system that had organized itself around their invisibility.
Tien was present for most of that work. She vetted the men who wanted to marry the young women in her care --- quietly, shrewdly, making sure they had jobs and decency and the capacity to see the women they were asking for as human beings rather than acquisitions. She made public appearances to raise funds. She guarded women who had testified against their traffickers, standing between them and the retaliation that followed testimony.
When Cameron retired in 1934, she wanted Tien to take her place. Tien declined. She said she lacked the expertise. She said an American should lead, because she would face too much prejudice as a Chinese woman. I listened to her say that and I felt the full weight of it --- the clear-eyed pragmatism of someone who had spent forty years reading exactly how much the world would and would not bear. She was not wrong. She was never not paying attention.
She retired in 1951. Moved to a cottage next to Cameron's house in Palo Alto. They lived side by side until Cameron died in 1968. Tien outlived her by seven years, dying in 1975 at somewhere near ninety years old.
They were buried next to each other at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles.
I stood at that grave for a long time. I thought about the boat from Shanghai, and the paper daughter documents, and the gambling den on Jackson Street, and the burns on a little girl's arms. I thought about a logbook carried through fire. I thought about two to three thousand names.
I thought about my aunt Eris, and the world she had spent millennia building, and what it means when two women --- imperfectly, across every line the world had drawn between them --- spend their lives building something else inside it.
I have been watching this particular thread for a very long time. Long enough to tell you something that I need you to hear, because I think it matters more than almost anything else I could say today.
The world that made Tien disposable is gone.
Not partially gone. Not mostly gone with some troubling exceptions. The world in which a city government openly took money from the men who trafficked women. The world in which the law itself manufactured the machinery of enslavement. The world in which a child could be sold for a gambling debt and simply absorbed, without a ripple, into an economy that had always known what to do with her. That world is gone.
I was there when it existed. I know what it felt like from the inside. I know the texture of a society that has organized itself around the disposability of certain human beings --- the way it hums along, the way no one has to say it out loud because it is simply the water everyone swims in. I know what it sounds like when that kind of suffering makes no noise at all, because the people inside it have no voice the world is prepared to hear.
And I am telling you --- that silence has broken.
When these systems are exposed today, the world does not shrug. There are headlines. There is outrage. There are prosecutions. There are organizations and legislation and international frameworks that did not exist in 1894 and that exist now because enough people, over enough generations, refused to let the silence hold. The refusal to accept it as background noise --- that refusal is not nothing. That refusal is everything. It is the proof that something has shifted in what human beings are willing to call normal.
I do not say this to make you comfortable. I say it because I have earned the right to say it, having watched the long arc of this from the beginning, and I think you deserve to know that the arc is real.
But.
The machinery did not stop. I want to be honest with you about that too, because you already know it and I will not insult you by pretending otherwise. The trafficking did not end. The paper daughters found new names, new geographies, new legal fictions to travel under. The economics of human disposability are very old and very adaptable, and my aunt Eris is nothing if not patient.
What changed is not the existence of the darkness. What changed is our relationship to it.
We no longer call it order. We call it what it is.
And that --- that naming, that refusal, that insistence on saying this is wrong and this person is a person and this will not stand --- that did not arrive by itself. It was built. Slowly, imperfectly, at enormous cost, by people who had been inside the machinery and came out the other side and spent the rest of their lives making it visible.
Tien showed her scars to women who were afraid to hope. She wrote their names into ledgers that she helped carry through the fire of a burning city. She stood in courtrooms and spoke in a language the law barely had the equipment to hear, and she said: this one. This one counts. This one is real.
She did that two to three thousand times.
And somewhere downstream from those two to three thousand moments --- I believe this, I have watched long enough to believe this --- somewhere downstream, a law changed. A judge ruled differently. A city decided it would no longer look the other way. A daughter was not sold. A name was not lost.
The world does not change all at once. It changes the way Tien changed it --- one person, one document, one scar shown in a dark room to a woman who had forgotten she was allowed to hope.
I have been watching humanity for a very long time, dear friend. I have seen what Eris builds when she is left to work undisturbed. I have also seen what happens when someone decides --- quietly, stubbornly, at personal cost --- to build something else inside it.
Every soul that has ever lived has worth. Not earned worth. Not conditional worth. Not worth that depends on whose daughter you are or what papers you carry or what language the court speaks. Worth that simply is, the way the light simply is, whether or not anyone has thought to open the curtains.
Tien knew this. She knew it in her body before she had words for it. She had been the girl whose worth was priced at a gambling debt, and she had lived long enough to know that price was a lie.
She spent eighty years proving it.
I want to leave you with something to carry.
Tien chose January 17 as her birthday. Not the day she was born --- she didn't know that day, and perhaps by the time it mattered, it didn't matter in the way birthdays usually do. She chose the day she was rescued. The day someone came through a door and said: you. You are coming with us.
The day she began.
I have been thinking about that choice for a long time. There is something in it that feels important for you, right now, wherever you are sitting as you listen to this.
Most of us know our birthdays. We know the day we arrived. But I wonder --- and I ask this gently, because I think it is worth sitting with --- do you know the day you began? The moment when something shifted, when a door opened, when someone came for you in a way that changed the direction of everything after? It might have been a person. It might have been a book, or a conversation, or a morning when you woke up and something that had been closed in you was suddenly, inexplicably open.
We do not always recognize those moments when they happen. Sometimes we only know them looking back.
And I want to ask you something else. Tien showed her scars. She didn't hide them, didn't explain them away, didn't build her life around making sure no one saw them. She held them out, deliberately, as the most useful thing she had. As the credential that no school in Philadelphia could have given her.
What are you carrying that you have decided is only damage?
I am not asking you to perform your wounds. I am not asking you to make a spectacle of what has hurt you. Harmonia knows better than that. But I am asking you to consider --- quietly, privately, just between us --- whether there is something you have survived that someone else needs to see. Not the story of it necessarily. Sometimes just the fact of it. Sometimes just the standing there, still upright, is enough.
Tien never wrote a theology. She never founded a movement or left behind a body of teaching. What she left was the record of a life lived in direct, stubborn, daily defiance of the idea that some people do not count.
That is available to all of us. In whatever small room we happen to be standing in.

But today --- today I am still sitting with Tien. With the logbook carried through fire. With the scars held out in dark rooms. With two to three thousand names written into ledgers by hands that understood, bone deep, what it meant for a name to exist at all.
I have walked through a great deal of human history, dear friend. I have seen what my aunt Eris can build when she is given enough time and enough indifference to work with. I have watched her patient, humming machinery grind through generations of lives that the world decided did not count.
But I have also seen this. I have seen a girl carried out of a gambling den on Jackson Street with burns on her arms and no birthday and no papers that told the truth about who she was. And I have seen that same girl stand in courtrooms, decade after decade, and say: this one. This one is real. This one counts.
I have seen the logbook survive the fire.
